Safe in the Grass

Each spring, the fields and gardens around us seem to come alive overnight. Tiny noses twitch in the grass, and it’s easy to see why well-meaning people worry when they spot a nest of baby rabbits alone.

At Tiggywinkles, we meet hundreds of these youngsters every year – many of them accidentally “rescued” from perfectly safe homes.

Mother rabbits leave their babies hidden and unattended for long stretches of the day to avoid attracting predators. To human eyes, a quiet, still nest can look abandoned. But in most cases, the mother is close by and will return under cover of dusk and dawn to feed them.

Of course, there are times when intervention is vital. If a baby rabbit is visibly injured, covered in flies, or its nest has been destroyed, it truly needs help. That’s when our dedicated team steps in, providing warmth, specialist feeding, and round-the-clock care. These fragile patients depend entirely on us until they are strong enough to return to the wild.
