Bonfire Night is a time of celebration for many, but for wildlife it can be one of the most dangerous nights of the year. Bernard the hedgehog is living proof of that hidden danger.

Rescued from a lit bonfire and rushed to Tiggywinkles, Bernard arrived in a critical state.
A large patch of his spines had been badly burnt, with severe damage to the delicate skin beneath. He was also suffering from shock and smoke inhalation, and in those first tense hours his survival was uncertain. Simply making it through the first 24 hours was a victory – but it marked only the beginning of a long and difficult journey.
Months later, we’re thrilled to share how far Bernard has come. With intensive care, including specialist wound treatment, skin support and laser therapy, his injuries have healed far beyond expectations. His wound has fully closed and most heartening of all, glossy new spines have grown back – a sign of just how resilient this little survivor is. Watching his progress has been a delight for everyone involved in his care.

Bernard has become a firm favourite among the team caring for him. He brings daily moments of joy to the hospital, and our intern vet Emily even calls him her “emotional support,” saying he lifts spirits on even the busiest days.
Stories like Bernard’s are only possible because of our members. Your generosity allows us to provide expert, round-the-clock care to wildlife in desperate need.
As Bonfire Night approaches each year, we continue to share an important message: if you’re planning a bonfire, please build it on the day you intend to light it and gently check the pile beforehand for hidden wildlife. A simple check can save a life.
By donating to Tiggywinkles, you will be helping us provide life-saving treatment and care to all species of British Wildlife.
