Recently, our rescue team was called to a busy road where a young deer was badly injured after being struck by a vehicle.
With cars rushing past, our team worked calmly and carefully to bring her to safety and rushed her back to our hospital. We did everything possible – but tragically, her injuries were far too severe, and we were unable to save her.
These are some of the hardest calls we receive, and sadly, they’re far from rare. At this time of year, when young deer are dispersing from their birth areas and other wildlife is on the move, we see a sharp rise in road casualties.

Why Autumn is a Riskier Time
Foraging behaviour – Animals like hedgehogs, foxes, and badgers are feeding more actively in preparation for winter.
Deer dispersal – Young deer leave their mothers in search of new territory, often crossing busy roads.
Reduced daylight – Shorter daylight hours mean more drivers are on the road at dawn and dusk, just when wildlife is most active.
For us, each rescue is personal. Every animal deserves a chance, and while we can’t always save them, we can at least ensure they are treated with dignity, compassion, and care.
